In the interest of transparency to our readers, here is a list of our potential or perceived conflicts of interest for our staff this year. As per the Griff code of conduct and conflict of interest guidelines, we believe that students should not be limited in their extracurricular activities, but should take care in avoiding conflicts of interest. As such, the following is a proactive disclosure of possible or perceived conflicts of interest that the Griff staff may have this year.
- Coordinating editor Ian Smyth and opinions and culture editor Evan Watt are both currently working for the Oilers Entertainment Group.
- Research editor Kelsie Johnston is currently working for the MacEwan University podcast Research Recast(ed).
- Graphics editor Forrester Toews, online editor Hayden Carkner, and multimedia editor Jesse Roma are all currently executive members of the Design Students Organization (DSO). The Griff is collaborating with the DSO this year for some content in the print editions of the Griff.
We take special care to not have conflicts of interest when developing and editing stories and content we produce. If a possible or perceived conflict of interest can arise with a project, you can be sure that we are taking steps to remove the conflict as best we can. If necessary, you may see disclosures or editor’s notes at the top of a story that requires extra context or care.
