How to Get Started
A student paper is nothing without student voices. All MacEwan students are welcome to work with the Griff, regardless of skill or experience. Contributing with the Griff will give you opportunities to learn new skills, make an impact in your community, and build a portfolio of published work.
Being a contributor is a volunteer role with no time commitment. The Griff’s editors will work with you to set deadlines and word counts that suit your capacity.
To get started, fill out the contributor sign-up form, and join our Discord server.
What can I contribute?
News reporting: Work with the news editors to report on things happening on and around campus. You’ll be interviewing sources, writing news briefs, and occasionally digging deeper into relevant topics.
Arts and culture: Report on shows and events, write reviews and recommendations, or cover student life and other cultural topics.
Opinions: Write well-informed opinion articles to share your ideas, or write small pieces for our Griff Notes section.
Features: These are long-form articles that explore a theme through a non-fictional narrative.
Sports: Cover Griffins’ games through recaps, profiles, photography, and features.
Humour: Send us funny comics, write a satirical piece about the latest hot topic, or just make something weird. We like weird.
Photojournalism: Capture photos for the news section. Usually these assignments require attendance to a press conference or an event. Photos for the news require little to no editing for the historical record.
Editorial photography: We’re always in need of high-quality photos to publish. take photos to accompany stories, or submit your work to be featured in the magazine. Feel free to send us your own work for consideration.
Illustration & design: Work with the graphics editor to create artwork for stories online and in our magazine. We also accept artwork that we can feature if it fits that month’s magazine. Send us your stuff!
Multimedia and video journalism: Translate stories into video format, talk with students across campus, and cover local events. The multimedia section is ever-evolving; pitch us your ideas if you’d like to try something new.
Weekly meeting
We meet every Tuesday at 5 p.m. in our office to talk about the news, pitch assignments, and occasionally run workshops. All students are welcome to drop-in and chat, pick up pitches, or pitch stories of their own. Come meet some new people and learn more about what you can do with the Griff.
The Griff office is located in the Dorchester building (10357 109 Street), across from SAMU. It’s the brick one.
