On Sept. 21, MacEwan University announced the launch of a new marketplace feature to the MacEwan Student Life app, allowing students to buy and sell a variety of different items. By Oct. 6, it was gone.
The marketplace feature was similar to other platforms like Facebook Marketplace, but was specifically suited to students.
The feature was available through the “groups” tab in the MacEwan Student Life app and required users to join the group, agree to the conditions, and then click the tab to see available listings or make their own sales.
Listings varied from textbooks to fashion, with divided tabs available to categorize them. The books tab received the most attention, with different study guides and textbooks for sale.
On Oct. 6, MacEwan announced the suspension of the marketplace feature, citing a change with the Ready Education platform, a key element behind the creation of the MacEwan Student Life app. The changes to Ready Education meant the removal of the forum feature, which was fundamental to the Marketplace.
MacEwan has not ruled out bringing back the feature one day, but there is no current timeline. It seems like future versions would be very different from the marketplace that was formerly available.
