This past Monday, MacEwan University announced on MyPortal the removal of waste bins from offices and classrooms to reduce the number of garbage bags, resulting in approximately 330 fewer bags per day.
The university will also install new hand dryers in bathrooms across campus, reducing paper towel use by 28,000 pounds annually.
Some rooms may be exempt from the change. Waste bins can still be found in some offices around campus, and some studio arts rooms in Allard Hall.
“Waste bins will remain in hands-on teaching and learning spaces, including science labs, performing arts spaces, shops, massage and acupuncture labs, nursing labs and similar spaces,” the university says.
MacEwan staff and students are encouraged to continue using centralized waste bins in hallways and common areas.
And so our classrooms become dirty and the co-working spaces (study rooms, the library) become covered in litter and garbage and tissues. I don’t understand why MU staff don’t just empty out the garbages less frequently. Like the end of every week rather than every single day. If they’re going to remove options from students, they need to at least provide us a place to file complaints round excessive garbage left in common areas.
I completely agree with Em’s comment. Where are people going to put their garbage if there are no receptacles? It’s not like they are going to take it home. This is ridiculous and will not reduce the amount of garbage but merely where it is left.
