Besides Christmas, Halloween is one of the most celebrated holidays. Halloween is a time when people can let their creative juices flow.
Some people (like me) spend all year waiting, thinking, and mastering their Halloween costumes, all while anxiously waiting for the fall drink menu to drop at the local cafe.
As creative as some may be, there are Halloween costumes that deserve to be banished from existence.
Every year, there’s a surge of costumes from movies that came out during the previous year. Some characters, however, deserve to stay on the screen and shouldn’t be turned into a Halloween costume.
There shouldn’t be any Bear or Nicky Obsession costumes. If anyone dares to use them as inspo for their couples costume, they’ll have completely missed the point of the film, and I will lose my mind.
The influx of people dressing up like Tyler Durden from Fight Club is also an issue. It’s almost as if Tyler Durden himself has gotten taken out by mainstream performative males acting like it’s a niche movie. The fact that I can’t walk down Whyte Avenue on Halloween without seeing a million off-brand Tyler Durdens ruins the holiday’s creativity. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with classics, like witches, zombies, vampires, or even ghosts.
Overall, I would rather see a group of guys flocking around, acting tough in prisoner outfits, than have to witness another inflatable dinosaur or a cringy couple’s costume.
Yet there are worse things out there, besides the mass storm of corseted costumes, and that’s the heavy stream of Loraxes running rampant every year. All love to the tree-saving man, but is our sense of humour diminishing so much that we find a small orange creature with a mustache that funny?
Halloween is now turning into a giant fest of unoriginality and Spirit Halloween slop. I would love to see a cute little Pillsbury Doughboy or even a Wonder Pet costume on Whyte Avenue this Halloween.
