Oktoberfest: the very word conjures up desires to drink beer and eat delicious German food. Fortunately, our very own German Club is hosting an Oktoberfest celebration on campus.
The festivities will take place in the Robbins Health Learning Centre from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Oct. 8. Admission is free and the event will be open to both students and the general public. Oktoberfest-themed food and beverages will be available for purchase, and there will be plenty of games and activities.
The event will feature a selection of German, as well as local, craft beers to wash away the midterm aftermath.
If you are not a beer connoisseur, no need to worry. Club member and former club president Reiss Kruger notes that, while the event will not be hosting a brewmaster, profiles of the beers can be given to those who ask. If you’re looking for more than beer, look no further — the event will boast a selection of German delicacies, including schnitzel and bratwurst.
The Bavarian Schuhplattlers of Edmonton, a local folk dance group, will be performing, and DJ Tyco from Hot 107.1 will be playing music throughout the event. Games will include stein hoisting and a barrel race in which contestants must steer their barrels around an obstacle course to achieve supremacy.
Following the celebration at MacEwan, there will be an after-party at The Ranch, where Oktoberfest brews will be available on tap. “They’ll be putting up some German decorations and playing some not-country music,” says Kruger.
There will not be shuttles from campus to The Ranch; event attendees are expected to arrange transportation to the bar. Festivities will continue throughout the night, and anyone who attends is encouraged to dress in theme, so dig out your lederhosen.
The German Club has been on campus for several years, although it has only recently taken off, according to Kruger. Moving forward, the club is hoping to host two more events during the school year. While Kruger no longer holds an executive position in the German Club, he remains heavily involved with the group.
“I just run around and get stuff done,” says Kruger.
